Canal Boat Trip, a must try when you visit Bangkok

Bangkok is a capital of Thailand. It is continuing to urbanize. There are many infrastructure and property development all over the city.

P_20171020_154237Bangkok Metropolis view from Rama IX Bridge over the Chao Phraya River

Bangkok is divided in two parts by the Chao Phraya River. The east bank of the Chao Phraya River is called Phra Nakhon. The west side of the Chao Phraya River is called Thon Buri. In the past these two part were divided into two provinces, the Phra Nakhon Province and Thon Buri Province. They were merged into a Bangkok Metropolis in 1971. Phra Nakhon is a center of government. There are many developments on the right side of the Chao Phraya River; both infrastructure and property. Anyway these urbanization is concentrated the mostly in Central and Northern Bangkok. While the most eastern area of Bangkok is still an agricultural area. You can see the paddle fields there.

Here I will focus on the left side of Bangkok. Thon Buri is situated in the Western Bangkok. It is an agricultural area both fruit gardens and rice fields from the past  until now. Although the agricultural area has been reduced because of urbanization.

In the past this area had only a few main roads. Most people traveled by boat in canals networks.  There are two important canals connect to the Chao Phraya River: Khlong Bankok Yai and Khlong Bangkok Noi. These two canals are the major transportation which access to many other canals. They form a network to access many communities in Thon Buri and other provinces westward of Bangkok. For example, the  Khlong Maha Sawat connects to Nakhon Chai Si which is a district in Nakhon Pathom Provine. The Khlong Phasi Charoen connects to Krathum Baen District which is a district in Samut Sakhon Province. Besides these two canals there are the major canals  such as Khlong Thawi Watthana, Khlong Sanam Chai and Khlong Bang Khun Thian. These canals have many branches which are networks in every communities in Thon Buri. The canals in Thon Buri area were important in transportation in the past and important for flooding protection system in the present.

Anyway the way of life has been changed. There are many networks of roads in Thon Buri. Travelling by boat has decreased. Just only the riversides habitat who still travel by boat. Most people would love to travel by land transport which we think is more comfortable than marine transport. However, the boat trip is a fantastic for tourism in Bangkok. It is an impressive activity for the tourists both foreign and local.

Khlong Bang Chueak Nang is one of a major canal which connect to Khlong Mon. It connects to the Chao Phraya River. It merges the Chao Phraya River at the Royal Thai Naval Base. You can enjoy the wonderful scenes along the both sides of this canal. You maybe forget that you are in the Bangkok metropolis. Because the residences along the canal are still old style. Sometimes you can see the mobile supermarket, mobile foods and snacks boats along the canal. You can see the wall of modern villages but not too much.

There are not any gardens here. Anyway you can enjoy the scenes of both sides of the canal with variety style of residences.

You can walk along the canal on the balcony of these buildings. The Artist’s House is an art exhibition and the puppet theater. There are the shows of puppet theater on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 14.00 pm. It is a free show. The house capability is about 50-60 persons. You can sit and drink a cup of coffee in the old Thai house with cool breeze from the canal. There is a small Thai food stall in the house on weekend. You can taste many Thai Foods while you watch the show of Thai Dramatic Puppet. It is a very wonderful time. Here is the highlight of the canal boat trip. If you visit here before the show you can visit around by walking along the trail of the local houses. I will talk about the Artist’s House in more detail on my next text.

There are three Buddhist temples in this community: Wat Thong Sala Nagam, Wat Saphan Bangchak and Wat Khuha Sawan. My recommend is Wat Saphan Bangchak. It is an old Buddhist Temple. It was built since Ayutthaya reign. There is a wall painting in front of the Ubosot. It is very beautiful painting. There is a local museum of Ban Khlong Bang Luang in the same area of nice open restaurant here.
